WESTSIDEDOOM’s “Gorilla Monsoon” Taps Hollywood For Its Sound

Despite the extremely disappointing news we received from Adult Swim and MF Doom yesterday, DOOM still came through before sunset, serving up “Gorilla Monsoon,” the first single from his upcoming collaborative project with Westside Gunn, WESTSIDEDOOM. Off the bat, the eerie as hell violin sample at the start of the track caught my ear. Come to find out, that violin is no ordinary sample.

Now, just to be clear, I wasn’t the one who uncovered the sample’s source. For that, I’ve gotta give it up to my friend across the Atlantic, George Fields. Homie put me on yesterday when he pointed out that the sound didn’t come from a classic break, but a classic cartoon–Ren & Stimpy, to be exact. At the 0:08 second mark in the clip below, you’ll find the sample employed in “Gorilla Monsoon.”

As for how my boy found the sample so quickly, he just said he just watched the show a lot and immediately recognized it. He also noted that the music from that Ren & Stimpy scene could have been used in other places as well.

Meanwhile, it turns out the backbone of the track can also be traced back to the worlds of film and TV. As noted by several YouTube commentators, the exact song sampled by Daringer for the record was originally used to close out the 1968 classic horror flick, Night of The Living Dead.

Daringer sampling a classic horror film is certainly attuned to the tastes of DOOM. Anyone familiar with the work of Metal Fingers knows damn well how much he loves those old school movies and television shows. Run through his extensive catalog and you’ll find samples taken from everything from Spiderman cartoons to Godzilla films.  Cheers to Daringer for picking out a damn good sample. MASS APPEAL already knows you could have cheffed up this nasty beat blindfolded.

As for those missing notebooks? There’s a conspiracy theory for that.
