The Eagles Come Up, Trade Sam Bradford to Vikings For Future 1st-Round Pick

The Philadelphia Eagles have completed a series of dizzying trades and maneuvers over the last two seasons, and this is certainly one of the most high-profile of them all. Today, Philly completed a deal that sent fluctuating starting quarterback Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings, in exchange for a future 1st and 4th-round pick.

Bradford, who was drafted with the first overall pick by the St. Louis Rams in the 2010 NFL Draft, was projected to be one of the best young quarterbacks in the league. After a stellar rookie campaign that garnered him Rookie of the Year honors however, injuries sidelined Bradford for much of 3 of the following 4 seasons, leaving him unable to prove to the Rams that he was their quarterback of the future.

The Rams–now the Los Angeles Rams, of course–traded Bradford to Philadelphia in 2014, where it appeared his career would catch a second wind under the inventive eye of Chip Kelly. However, Bradford’s continued struggles with injury made that impossible, and the Eagles picked standout collegiate quarterback Carson Wentz with the 2nd overall pick in this year’s draft.

That left the door open for Bradford to either be bought out of his contract or traded, but the Eagles chose to do neither, and appeared set to name Bradford the Week 1 starting quarterback, especially considering the fact that Wentz did little to distinguish himself during training camp. Today though, with just a week left until the start of the regular season, Bradford was traded to the Vikings, who just lost their franchise QB, Teddy Bridgewater, to a season-ending injury.

In another plot twist, Wentz, who was initially believed to be a 3rd-string option for the Eagles to start the season–behind Bradford and Chase Daniel–will reportedly start in Week 1 if he’s healthy enough to go. The Eagles play host to the Browns on Sunday, September 11.

The Vikings, on the other hand, will have to wait and see if their gamble pays off. The only reason they’d pull off a deal this close to the start of the season is if they truly believe they can compete this year. With a stout defensive front, Adrian Peterson in the backfield, and a criminally underrated wide receiver core, they potentially could.
