“C. Delores”

There isn’t a need to specifically address the damage Royce Da 5’9″ does on this record, the first off his upcoming The Bar Exam 4 mixtape that’s dropping tomorrow. All you need to know is that it is a six-minute exercise in rapping over a sample of the glorious “Chanson D’Un Jour D’Hiver” by French composer Cortex—an instantly recognizable track that often brings out the best in an MC. We’ve heard some terrific artists take it on—from Rick Ross, to Jeezy, to Curren$y, to Madlib—but there’s something about Royce’s interpolation of noted ’90s rap detractor C. Delores Tucker’s cranky sound bites and the airy cadence with which he delivers lines like, “I’m a living legend/ You’re a fidget spinner.” That combination makes his rework of Cortex’s most famous work arguably the best. Khari Nixon

After teasing the collab on his Twitter for over two months, prolific Detroit rapper BONES has finally dropped his song with Danny Brown and it’s nothing short of massive. As part of BONES’ newest mixtape, NoRedeemingQualities, “SeanPaulWasNeverThereToGimmeTheLight” brings the two Michigan artists together for the first time. Over a blown-out and ominous production by FAMELESS, and with a chorus likening tightly rolled herb to Under Armour, the two take the time to shout out the one and only.  Kyle Petreycik

Yo, Dizzee has got BARZ on this track. It dropped late Friday night, so we’re finding space for it here, because grime’s original international face deserves, like, at least a mention. The video is mad techy, shining like some odee 3M stylees, with effects drifting off his movements as if they were visual reverb. The beat is basically functional, just a means for him to unleash a steady flow of rhymes. All my traditional lyricist guys will be pleased, because it’s a whole gang of rhymes. He doesn’t just spit a 16, it’s like a 97…the year y’all are stuck in (JKJK!!). Just bar after bar after bar, keeping the same rhyme throughout. Choice lines? Here are a couple: “Call me your Majesty, sometimes it feels like world’s on my phallus/ Push out my chest and I big up my status/ Where’s all the trappers? Where’s all the clappers?/ I am not shaken, no need for maracas.” Maracas tho! More? Okay, here’s another: “Don’t follow the cattle, so quiet your chatter or you will get battered/ Can’t find enough time to dine on these rappers, all of these MCs are looking like tapas/ Fuck all the swine and their bodily gases, roll with the rastas.” He even got a global warming mention in there while working within a food theme lmao. (For real though, check your meat intake if you wanna live.) Anyway, big up the big Rascal. Nice to hear some new tunes. Looking forward to the new album, Raskit, due July 21. —Mike Steyels

“Twenty Did It Again”

24hrs’ vocals seem to float in a new dimension, bending and stretching space in all directions. He’ll rock in a slow pattern, allow reverb to tail off into the darkness, then speed up the flow for a rippled texture, only to stop short and allow echoes to ping pong around in the abrupt silence. Unexpected words are unfurled within a line while others are doubled up in parallel. People talk about caring about beats more than lyrics, but the beat here is actually pretty simple other than some atmospheric loops. It’s the melody and tones and arrangement of his altered voice that make this track worth what it is. It’s definitely not his lyricism that carries the weight. He’s basically channeling Britney: Oops, he did it again. The song’s all about him tryna smash this girl again, but she’s not with it and keeps repeating the same words over and over. But the vocals, oh those vocals. They’re like Atlas, carrying the whole damn thing. Definitely watch for Twenty. —MS

“Mask Awfff”

“Whats wrong with me” is the only comment Esta has provided for what may be the most absurd rework of Future’s “Mask Off” that we’ve heard yet. After clicking play and bracing myself for the inevitable, the track took me by surprise as the Los Angeles producer flexed his production chops and introduced a whole new flavor via System of a Down’s “Chop Suey.” Esta flips the song’s guitar lick into a jam that even the Atlanta space alien could vibe with.
