If hate was the new love there would be a lot of niceness on the planet and life would be like a yoga retreat (minus the awkward poses). Unfortunately spiritual awareness is not on everyone’s agenda. Wrath and envy count for 2 of the 7 deadliest sins—throw in greed and pride you’ve got a recipe for hate. And in a world where the internet dominates, this can be a breeding ground for hurtful shots to be fired. Other people’s success can bring these sins out in the best of people, but if you’re on the receiving end it can be a painful feeling whether you admit it or not. As Cardi B recently noted: “One of the reasons Bodak Yellow went #1 cuz even the HATERS LOVE IT !!” Let’s face it: hate is inevitable and when it comes your way you’ve just got to find a way to deal with it. Check this month’s dancehall cuts that can get you through those moments when you need them most:

Popcaan “El Chapo”

This new badman tune from Popcaan sends a deadly message to his enemies. Unfortunately, as noted above, success brings envy and jealousy. So it follows that lots of success—the sort of success that Popcaan has enjoyed in recent times—must bring lots of the same. Hate can come in different forms: some from direct competitors, some from frenemies, those who pose as your best friend might be the ones you need to keep at a distance. As Bob Marley once said, “who the cap fit let them wear it.”

Naming his track after one of the most known notorious drug lords in the world leaves little doubt as to where Papi’s head is at. The name of the game is survival and when you run your own cartel then you call the shots. Just like a lethal injection Papi delivers his lyrics smoothly over this Notnice production “Me ova dweet / Put the ‘K pon repeat” Popcaan sings on his opening verse. Whichever bee has gotten inside his bonnet had better have one eye open at all times because the Unruly Boss sounds like he’s ready to bust shots where and when necessary.
