PREMIERE: Pearl Gates “Rocks Right Now” Video

Some hip hop just feels right. You click the link or press play on your remote and you’re in that zone. This premiere is exactly that. If you’ve caught a Pearl Gates guest spot on Masta Ace’s “Story of Me” or eMC’s “Fly Thoughts,” you already know son is a beast on the bars and hooks. If you’re a Gates fan, you’re stoked we finally got him up in here because you were jamming to his Diamond Mind EP in 2015 and his collab EP with Syll, Play This, last year.

This Washington Heights mic bully has been rocking with European hip hop stable Below System Records since his initial 2015 EP and now they’re ready to gift us (no, it’s not free) his full-length debut, Live From The First. The album is full of block-centric tales that detail the goings-on at 181st in upper Manhattan.

If you want an idea of what kind of hardcore hip hop Gates brings to the table, “Rocks Right Now” and the accompanying video are the perfect introduction. The classic drum loop knocks so hard on this that the sample is almost superfluous, and when Gates starts dumping, you’ll get amped up… possibly even start acting mannish. Don’t believe us—try us mahfuggah. See what we’re saying?

Live From The First drops on Below System Records on October 20th.
