Listen to Thundercat’s New Single, “Walk On By,” Featuring Kendrick Lamar

Thundercat was an essential collaborator for Kendrick Lamar when the two worked together on perhaps 2015’s most essential rap album, To Pimp a Butterfly. This time around, Lamar returns the favor by appearing on “Walk On By,” a track from Thundercat’s upcoming record that’s a lesson in transparent reflection.

On TPAB, accomplished bassist Thundercat helped craft the compositions for “Wesley’s Theory,” “These Walls,” “Hood Politics” and “Complexion,” expertly fusing jazz with the colloquial brand of g-funk that made up much of Butterfly‘s sonic identity. On “Walk On By,” Thundercat delivers a lo-fi atmosphere where he and Kendrick painfully reflect on love and relationships lost, opportunities blown and America’s imbalanced social landscape. The always insightful Lamar raps, “Nine times out of 10, young n****s are 9 or 10/ When the line becomes thin/ Be a killer or fireman.”

Thundercat’s new album, Drunk, will be out this Friday, February 24. Listen to “Walk On By” below.
