Keyon Harrold Releases Title Track to His Album ‘The Mugician’

Grammy Award–winning trumpeter Keyon Harrold released the title track to his upcoming album The Mugician song this morning. Debuting on Billboard, the track will be released on Mass Appeal Records and Legacy Recordings. In the interview accompanying the premiere, Keyon retells how in October of 2015, while he was working on what would become his second album, a thief made off with his laptop and seven hard drives. Having worked with such major artists as Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Eminem, Keyon Harrold’s drives likely held a fair amount of heat.

“It was the kind of thing where I could either cry and get super-depressed or say, ‘Y’know what? The universe says that wasn’t supposed to come out,'” Harrold said. “A lot of the songs were about heartbreak and stuff like that. I had just gone through a relationship, a divorce and whatnot, and my life was kind of up in the air. I was basically airing out those feelings on that record that didn’t come out. I look at it as God saying, ‘I need you to approach it in a different way.'”

Two songs that survived the theft, “Stay This Way” and “Wayfaring Traveler,” are included on the album. The rest of the 12 tracks Keyon created from scratch.

The idea for the “The Mugician” track came from a conversation with Don Cheadle over breakfast while they were promoting the Miles Ahead movie which Cheadle produced, directed, and starred i—and for rmee which Keyon Harrold provided all of the trumpet playing for. In the conversation Don referred to Keyon’s work in the film as magicial and later after they toyed with the wordplay between musician and magician, Don introduced Keyon at a panel discussion as “The Mugician.”

Due out on September 29th, The Mugician features some of Keyon Harrold’s contemporaries and frequent collaborators from multiple genres including Robert Glasper, Bilal, Big K.R.I.T., Gary Clark, Jr., Pharoahe Monch and more. Check out the title track here and pre-order The Mugician here.
