Watch Esperanza Spalding Make Her Next Masterpiece on Facebook Live

Esperanza Spalding has set out to make history again. Already the first jazz artist to win the Best New Artist award at the Grammys, the vocalist, composer and musician has begun recording her sixth studio album live. If you’re thinking that there’s nothing historical about that, let us clarify: Over the next 77 hours, Esperanza Spalding will be streaming the studio sessions for her next album, titled Exposure, on Facebook Live, creating the album entirely from scratch. All of the writing, composing, recording, producing and arranging will be done live under the watch of a multi-cam setup. Every second of the session will be recorded, including breaks, meals and sleeping. And at the end of the 77-hour session, the finished album will be released via Concord Records. She will be joined in the studio by fellow musicians Andrew Bird, Robert Glasper and Lalah Hathaway on the afternoons of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

In addition to sharing her process, Esperanza will be viewing a monitor with live commentary from the audience and will incorporate their suggestions. In addition to the music, Esperanza’s own notes taken during the session will come with the album.

On the decision to allow the cameras in, Esperanza says, “I foresee that creating before a live audience will add excitement and extra inspiration energy. Knowing someone is watching and listening to what you’re making seems to conjure up a sort of ‘can’t fail’ energy, the necessity to keep going because it’s live draws up another depth of creative facility that can’t be reached when you know you can try again tomorrow.”

The album is available for pre-order now, but will only be available for 7,777 purchases of CD or vinyl. Be sure to tune in.
