Robot Kanye and Clothed Kim Unveil Naked Sculptures at “Famous” Gallery Exhibit

While the world’s attention was on Kanye’s VMA moment and the debut of his “Fade” video, Los Angeles residents were able to see the “Famous” sculptures IRL at the mega-gallery Blum & Poe. On Friday night, the Kardashians showed up to the private viewing at the gallery and Kanye was there in the form of a remote-controlled robot with a video screen for a face. Viewers were presented with the naked, life-size sculptures of the ubiquitous couple sleeping in a bed alongside other famous figures like Donald Trump and Taylor Swift.

The visuals for “Famous” — inspired by artist Vincent Desiderio’s 2008 painting “Sleep” — didn’t take home the award for video of the year last night, but it sure-as-hell accomplished getting the attention the artist craves. When it first dropped, the short film instantly garnered headlines for its risky, nude presentation of controversial personalities and celebrities that tabloids tend to link to the on-going public soap opera that is Kanye’s life.

At the time of its release, it wasn’t even clear how the mysterious video was made. Were the models CGI? Wax figures? Were they really breathing? Well, visitors to Blum & Poe could see the sculpture in the “flesh” for two nights only. The models were made of silicon and they do indeed breathe in a life-like manner.

According to W Magazine, Kanye was on the East Coast for his new tour so he was only able to show up in the form of the aforementioned robot. But that didn’t stop him from rolling around the room and giving orders to make slight adjustments to the sheets. Staffers reported that Yeezy oversaw a team of sculptors, tattoos artists and various other artisans to bring the sculpture to fruition and Kim got involved as well. “I shaved my own butt,” she explained, “It was a little too small, and then it was a little too big. I was there with the tools to get it right.”

On a certain level, you have to admire Kanye’s choice to show up as a rolling-robo-surrogate to an exhibition of his own animatronic visage.
