Gruesome Details of XXXTentacion’s Alleged Beating of Ex-Girlfriend Unearthed
Still want to separate the artist from the person?
A No. 2 debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and an unexpected Kendrick Lamar cosign is generally enough for an artist to earn universal praise. But that’s not the case for Florida native XXXTentacion. The volatile rapper may have built a sturdy following despite a general lack of radio presence, but he’s hardly a rap Cinderella. Last year, he was charged with a litany of felonies—including domestic battery by strangulation and aggravated battery of a pregnant woman—stemming from a string of 2016 incidents involving the rapper’s then-girlfriend. Today, Pitchfork published notes from a 142-page transcript of the alleged victim’s January deposition testimony, the first detailed insight into what brought about XXX’s charges. And the word heinous may not do them justice.
Per the notes, XXX and the alleged victim met online and linked up once before the victim attended one of XXX’s shows in May of 2016. The victim testified that XXX grabbed her neck in the crowd that same night, walking away quietly afterward. At a subsequent house party in North Miami, the rapper invited the victim to move in with him, which she did the very next day.
The rest of the victim’s lengthy testimony is littered with accounts of incidents in which XXXTentacion was allegedly verbally and physically abusive or threatening. In one instance, the victim testified that XXX once asked her to choose between vaginal penetration by “barbecue pitchfork” or by “barbecue cleaner” as punishment for complimenting a male friend’s jewelry. (She says he didn’t carry out the assault, but he did “lightly drag the tool against [the victim’s] inner thigh” as she passed out.) Elsewhere, the victim testified that around the time they moved to Orlando in July of 2016, XXX was threatening to kill her “literally like every day,” and that after being released from jail last fall, he put a knife to her neck and threatened to “fuck her up” with an empty glass bottle.
There’s also an account of XXX’s alleged beating of the victim while she was pregnant in October. She testified in January that after finding out about her pregnancy, which was planned, XXXTentacion threatened to kill her “and this jit” if she didn’t tell him the truth about the man she slept with while XXX was incarcerated. The victim testified that by “jit,” XXX was referring to their unborn child.
Moments later, the victim said that XXX began elbowing, head-butting, punching and strangling her until she nearly lost consciousness. Afterwards, he took her to the bathroom and demanded the truth again, threatening to kill the victim in the bathtub if she didn’t divulge more information. XXX has not admitted to physically harming the victim or knowing she was pregnant. Meanwhile, court documents charge that XXX “knew, or should’ve known,” that the alleged victim was carrying his child.
The large-scale discussion of whether personal transgressions and character flaws should be taken into consideration when evaluating an artist’s musical output has been recurring this year, thanks in part to XXX and R. Kelly. The gruesome details included in this testimony, however, are very difficult to discount.
