The Worst Cops of 2017

Policing in America has taken a turn over the past five years as more Americans have become aware of just how bad police and our criminal justice system is and always has been. The NAACP has even issued a travel warning for the entire state of Missouri because of recent legislation that protects cops. And, more recently, officials in Dallas have announced that they, like many police departments, are having a hard time finding people to hire. Essentially, nobody likes cops any more and nobody wants to be a cop.

Now, this list of the worst cops of 2017 couldn’t possibly cover all of the incidents from 2017 where cops used their power—given to them via a badge, gun and tax payer’s dollars—to abuse the trust of Americans, but here are 24 times where cops were completely and utterly terrible.

The Michigan State Police Director Who Called NFL Protesters “Degenerates”

When the NFL protests were in full swing, Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue took to Facebook to express her thoughts that nobody asked for. She said that the NFL players taking knee to protest systemic racism and police brutality were “millionaire ingrates who hate America and disrespect our armed forces and veterans” and “a bunch of rich, entitled, arrogant, ungrateful, anti-American degenerates.”

The Entire Charlottesville Police Department

The Charlottesville PD really fucked up this year in how they handled the protests organized by white supremacists. Then there’s the fact that the police attempted to arrest a black man who was brutally attacked by white supremacists.

The Cop Who Mocked Protesters Who Were Run Down by a White Supremacist in Charlottesville

“Hahahaha love this, maybe people shouldn’t block roads,” wrote Conrad Lariviere, an officer with the Springfield police department in Massachusetts. He made the comments online, then after the backlash wished people would “leave him alone.” He’s still employed.

The White Cop Who Shot His Fellow Officer Because He Was Black

A police chase snaked its way through the St. Louis are and landed in the neighborhood of a police officer who was enjoying his time off. He heard the commotion and decided to assist his colleagues. But instead of welcoming their fellow officer’s help, “police on the scene told the off-duty officer to get on the ground and surrender. He complied with their commands.” Another officer then came along who recognized him and told the others to let him get up. That’s when a fourth officer shot him.

The Cops in D.C. Who Handcuffed Black Teenagers for Selling Bottles of Water

Three teenagers who were simply trying to make a few bucks this summer were placed in handcuffs by plain clothes officers in Washington, D.C. for the crime of selling bottled water. “My kids sell water and everyone smiles at them. These kids do it and get arrested. It IS racist,” Tim Krepp, a tour guide in the area wrote later before adding, “God forbid the actual free market be allowed on our National Mall.”

The Philly Cop Who Adopted a Dog and Then Left it to Die

Michael Long is a 33-year-old man with a cold, dark heart. He’s was also a Philadelphia police officer for eleven years and was charged with two misdemeanors for animal cruelty, one misdemeanor count for possession of an instrument of a crime, and one summary charge of animal cruelty. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross has also ordered him suspended for 30 days with intent to dismiss.

The dog’s name iss Cranberry and Cranberry is doing okay now. But this what Officer Long did to him.

The cop who killed Eric Garner Who Still Has a Job

While this incident didn’t happen this year, NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo, the cop who choked Eric Garner to death for selling cigarettes, continues to be in the headlines for his violent past.

Leaked documents were sent to Think Progress by an anonymous source who claimed they worked at the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), an independent NYPD watchdog group. The documents indicate that prior to Garner’s death, Pantaleo had seven disciplinary complaints and 14 individual allegations, four of which were substantiated. The documents were a part of an ongoing lawsuit whose details are not immediately clear. The person who leaked the documents was fired.

Some of the allegations included in the documents reveal Pantaleo:

  • Refused to seek medical attention for an individual in 2009.
  • Hit an individual against an inanimate object in 2011.
  • Made abusive vehicular stops and searches on two separate occasions in 2012.
  • Used physical force during another incident in 2013.
The Pennsylvania School Police Officer Who Knocked Out a Kid’s Tooth

Steve Shaulis, a school police officer at Woodland Hills High School in Churchill, Pennsylvania, knocked out the tooth of a 14-year-old he was arresting. The reason that the grown-ass officer used physical force on Que’Chawn Wade was because he allegedly stole a cell phone from a fellow student. Wade was being questioned about the theft by Shaulis and Kevin Murray, the principal for the school. During the questioning, according to Wade’s lawyer. Shaulis called the student a gay slur. When he did this, the conversation escalated and Wade eventually left the school in an ambulance.

The NYDP Officers Who Keep Sexually Assaulting People

This year we learned about Officers Eddie Martins and Richard Hall, both of whom were narcotics officer working in Brooklyn. The two have been accused of arresting an 18-year-old girl for weed, placing her in handcuffs in the back of their NYPD police van, driving her to a parking lot in Coney Island, and raping her in the back of the van. The victim alleges that one of the officers forced sex on her and they both forced her to give them oral sex.

Then there’s the unidentified surgeon within the NYPD who went to Delilah’s strip club on the Lower East Side. While there, he met an employee of the bar who told the surgeon that she wasn’t feeling well. The NYPD surgeon then offered to drive her home, but according to the New York Daily News, he instead took the victim back to his place and raped her.

Lt. Greg Abbot, a Police Officer in Cobb County, Georgia, Who Joked During a Traffic Stop That Police “Only Kill Black People”

The Police in Ohio Who Want Us to Believe That a 17-year-Old Who Was in Handcuffs in the Back of a Police Car Killed Himself

A woman reported that she had been robbed by three men. Akron police arrested three suspects, one of whom was Xavier McMullen, and put them into separate squad cars, handcuffed. Police say they left the squad cars to question potential witnesses and upon returning found a handcuffed McMullen dead with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. The officers allegedly found a .45 caliber pistol in the back of the car next to him. The medical examiner’s office ruled it a suicide.

The Nazi D.C. Cop

A cop in D.C. was busted wearing a shirt announcing his racist beliefs. According to local reports, “The T-shirt shown in a photo says ‘Powershift Seventh District.’ A Celtic cross stands in the place of the letter O. The symbol is used by white supremacist groups including the Ku Klux Klan, according to the Anti-Defamation League. The shirt shows a skeleton holding a rifle and the MPD shield, with the D.C. flag as a backdrop. Below the image is the words “Let me see that waistband jo.”

“The message conveyed on the t-shirt does not represent MPD’s values,” the police department said in a tweeted statement. “We understand the trust of the community is critical to our ongoing work and take seriously any incidents that may undermine the confidence the community has in our members.”

The Georgia Sheriff Caught in the Middle of the Night With His Dick Out in a Park

Sheriff Jeffrey Mann was walking around Piedmont Park in Atlanta, an area known for prostitution, when an officer on a bike spotted him walking towards him with his dick out, making some sort of inappropriate gesture towards the cop. According to local news outlet 11 Alive, “The officer said he hid behind a tree to prevent Mann from seeing the reflective tape on his City of Atlanta police bicycle.”

When the officer identified himself, Mann started running. He was apprehended a few blocks away and it seems he tried to use his badge as a way to catch a break. While Mann was in cuffs walking towards a patrol car to get processed, he tried to convince the arresting officer to get his supervisor on the line, who apparently wasn’t available. Mann was then transported to a police station for processing.

The Cop Caught on Camera Threatening to Kill a Black Teenager

This happened in Lansing, Illinois, where an off-duty cop was caught on camera, pinning 15-year-old Jordan Brunson to the ground, choking him and then telling the teenager who suffers from asthma, “You are on my fucking property, I could fucking kill you.”

The Cop Who Pulled a Gun on Some Black Teenagers for No Apparent rRason

The incident in question happened on March 12, when police got a report of some kids fighting on a basketball court where a gun was also allegedly spotted. When police arrived ten minutes later, they saw a group of five black kids walking to wherever it was they were going. An officer stopped the kids and immediately pointed his gun in their direction. Thankfully he didn’t just start firing. “Can you please put the gun down?” one of the boys pleads. “I do not want to die, bro,” another says.

The Cop Who Put a Gun to an Unarmed Man’s Head and Said, “I’ll kill you”

On March 26, James Yarborough was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for traffic violations. Not wanting to be arrested, Yarborough decided to make a run for it. Yarborough claims that the driver, whom he says he simply hitched a ride from because his own car was out of gas, had a gun and that’s why he decided to run. Yarborough, who has previously been convicted for illegally having guns, claims that the man in the car tried to sell him a pistol, and when the cops flashed the car, it made more sense in his mind to run rather than getting charged for having another gun. He told local reporters, “The only thing I did wrong that day was run. That is the only thing I did wrong that day.”

Officer Jon Dunham eventually removed his gun from Yarborough’s head, and Yarborough was eventually placed in handcuffs, but not before another officer threatened to “light him up” with a taser. Officers also admit to punching and elbowing him.

The White Texas cop Who Killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards

Earlier this year, Jordan Edwards, a freshman honor student at Mesquite High School and a running back for the football team, was gunned down by Texas police officers. Edwards was trying to leave a party on Saturday night with a group of friends. According to the family’s attorney, they were leaving the party because cops had arrived. Neighbors were complaining about drunken teenagers on the streets. Police say that’s when an “unknown altercation” happened with the car in which Edwards was a passenger, so officers felt the need to fire several shots at the car, killing Edwards, who was in the passenger seat. Officer Roy Oliver was fried and charged with murder. His trial has yet to happen, but given every thing we know about cops who kill, we’re not holding our breath for prison time.
