A spireworks user flexes her color changing skyscraper abilities.

Become NYC’s Biggest Tool With This App That Changes 2 Skyscraper Spire Colors

People in New York are always so extra, whether it be buying avocado toast, $10 pressed juice or electric longboards. And today, a Wall Street Journal story points out this new, invite-only Spireworks app that lets users change the color of two skyscrapers in Midtown, The Bank of America Tower and 4 Times Square.

Spireworks was created by Mark Domino, a digital media artist (and son-in-law of real estate tycoon Douglas Durst, owner of the buildings in question). In 2010 he created the app so users could log in and change the color for a whopping two minutes.

With limited access and each user getting only five invites total, it’s become an idiotic status symbol for New Yorkers within a walled-off community of around 10,000 users. People interviewed in the WSJ story including those using the app to impress guests at rooftop parties, to mess with gullible tourists and to sell an $8.6 million dollar apartment. And, sadly, according to Domino, the biggest users of the app are men using it in fruitless attempts to pick up girls.

“He said that in a recent survey of Spireworks users, bartenders at the Boom Boom Room, a millennial hot spot atop the Meatpacking District’s Standard Hotel, complained the club was saturated with men using the app to try to seduce women.”

Clearly, Spireworks isn’t associated with the most charming New Yorkers, but hey, maybe there’s really no better way to announce the gender of your baby by changing the lights of an ugly building in Midtown. Naturally, with all things that offer a false sense of increased status, the WSJ also reported that invites have made it onto the resale market on eBay, Craigslist and even Tinder.

There are about two million better things to do in this city. Try harder, bruh.
