Remember When Snoop Dogg Did ‘SNL’ Doggy Style?

On May 8, 2004, Snoop Dogg became just the third MC to ever host Saturday Night Live, following in the footsteps of MC Hammer (who was the first rapper to host the show in 1991) and Queen Latifah, who hosted the show in 2003.

However, it wasn’t Snoop’s first appearance on the show. He made his SNL debut as a musical guest on March 19, 1994, performing the songs “Gin and Juice” and “Lodi Dodi” from his blockbuster 1993 debut, Doggystyle.

His 1994 appearance was also a defining moment in hip hop fashion. During the taping where, Snoop wore an iconic, striped Tommy Hilfiger rugby.

In an interview with Complex, Tommy Hilfiger’s brother, Andy Hilfiger, explained how he got Snoop to rock that classic Tommy piece and the hype it created just hours later. Two weeks before his performance, Snoop was invited to visit Tommy Hilfiger’s corporate offices to get hooked up with the brand. On the night before his SNL performance, Andy told Complex that he got a call from Snoop asking Andy to bring more of that fuego to his hotel. The next day, the shirt sold out. In Andy’s words:

“I went back to work on Monday, and our sales people from around the country for Hilfiger were like, ‘Did something happen because everybody wants more rugbys? Everybody wants more of our logo’d items.’ I was like, ‘Oh, yeah. Snoop Dogg was on Saturday Night Live.’ So, as much as (Grand) Puba made it cool on the streets, Snoop brought it to the national level.”

In 1997, Snoop returned to SNL to perform two singles from his 1996 album Tha Doggfather, his last album on Death Row. He made his third appearance as a musical guest in 1999 with Dr. Dre. Together they performed “Still Dre” from Dre’s classic sophomore album, 2001.

Only three other rappers have hosted SNL since Snoop. Queen Latifah returned as a host in 2004 and Ludacris made his debut as a host in 2006. The most recent MC to take SNL centerstage is Drake, who has hosted the show twice over the past three years.
