Top Five? Rihanna, Rihanna, Rihanna, Rihanna, Rihanna

You knew it was coming, right? Every year around this time, Rihanna ditches her L.A. mansion and her habit of leaving wine bars one glass lighter to travel to her native Barbados for the Crop Over Festival, one of the biggest and grandest carnival celebrations in the Caribbean. And every year, the superstar singer shows up in an ornate and revealing outfit that transforms her into a wining calypso and soca superhero.

Rihanna debuted her enthralling 2017 Crop Over look on Snapchat today, sending the internet into a frenzy. Hours later, she uploaded higher-resolution photos to her Instagram, and, well… help.

Shut it down. This is art. It also may be Rihanna’s best Crop Over look yet, but we hesitate to say that because we don’t want to in any way denigrate the costumes she’s worn at previous festivals. In fact, she deserves added celebration for topping last year’s look that shook folks to their cores.

Fans have already begun putting together galleries of Rih’s look over the years. Each one has been color-coordinated down to the fingernail polish. Sometimes her hair is red, sometimes it’s a dirty blonde color, this year it was turquoise, but every year she manages to find a way to take it to another level, and 2017 is obviously no different.

The somewhat self-explanatory term “crop over” initially was a reference to the celebration of a successful season of sugar harvesting in Barbados, dating back to the late 17th century, but it’s now an international spectacle that’s attended by tens of thousands of people. Having Rihanna consistently show up and shut shit down may have something to do with that these days.
