Playboi Carti Puffs A Blunt And Reminisces While Airbrushing a T-Shirt

Just last week two tracks from Playboi Carti’s self-titled debut album appeared on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart. “Magnolia” and the Lil Uzi Vert collab “wokeuplikethis” heralded the 21-year-old Atlanta native’s arrival at a new level within the rap game.
It’s been quite a ride for Jordan Terrell Carter, who set his sights on a music career while still attending high school. “I used to skip school and go to the studio,” he recalls. “I was like ‘Yo, I wanna get signed to a label before I do anything’—and I did it.”
Carti first got down with Awful Records in ATL and then moved to the Bronx, where he met ILLZ and Bari of A$AP Mob, then relocated to Houston before inking his current deal with Interscope Records. “I came from SoundCloud,” he says. “If my fans wanna be like ‘Nah, Carti is SoundCloud’ let Carti be SoundCloud. If one of my fans be like, ‘Nah, Carti, he goin’ up. He fuckin’ mainstream.’ Then Carti fuckin’ mainstream. It’s whatever they fuckin’ want. I’m satisfied as long as they satisfied.”
He did his first New York show at the intimate LES boutique The Good Company four years ago. “I performed in here,” he remembers. “I was like 17. How many people was here? It was thick! And ever since then I just kept coming back.”
For the latest episode of “Shop Talk” Carti returns to 97 Allen Street to get a custom airbrushed T-shirt courtesy of Arvid Logan aka Muckman. (If you’re trying to cop a custom Muckman design of your own, hit him up right here and he’ll ship to you.)
Watching the creative process in action inspires Carti to ask Muckman for an on-the-spot airbrushing lesson. The blunt may have provided some inspiration as well. Carti is not a fan of such high-tech smoking devices as dabs and vapes.
“I have a bong,” he says. “I use my bong as a fuckin’ vase. It’s too extra. It defeats the purpose, like, ‘Damn—you tryin’ to get that high? Fuck.'” Peep the visuals up top.
