For New York heads, old photographs of the city bring out strange feelings of contact nostalgia. Some older residents tell ’90s babies that we are buggin’ if we think NYC was better back in the day. They throw the history book at us, citing the great fiscal crisis (our city was deadass on the brink of bankruptcy), the Son of Sam, the crack era and so on. But that’s why old flicks are so great. You get most of the good and none of that fucked up shit!

The good folks down at the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation just released a treasure trove of old photographs from East Village artist Caroline Teller. Teller’s pictures are wonderful snapshots of a time when tags hit walls like flies and SoHo wasn’t filled with kids waiting in line for Supreme drops. Teller’s photos were taken between the 1960s andthe early 1990s. They’re all great, but my favorites have got to be the ones featuring old school painted ads. Some serious painting skills were needed to throw those up back in the day and graffiti artists like ESPO have established that connection.

Check out some of these flicks below and support the GVSHP by copping some prints, too!
