PREMIERE: Memphis MC Hotel Delivers Wavy New “Code Talk”

I first met Hotel last summer in Memphis through some good friends from Atlanta (s/o Motion Family) who had asked the ATL Twins who they should hook up with while they were in town. The ATL Twins sent my guys to Ish, and Ish brought along his man, Hotel. We sat outside, shot the shit, drank a few beers and then hit the parking lot to listen to some of the records Hotel had been working on. The records were strong, which was great—saved us all that awkward when you’ve just met someone and they want to play you music and it’s actually trash.

We hung out a few more times during those summer months. I saw Hotel turn a sweaty backyard house party into a muddy mosh pit one night, and thought it was fresh when he posted the black and white photos from the party on his IG (since deleted) with the caption “Young Elvis,” playing off his strong rockabilly look. I checked in on him again at a state-of-the-art studio tucked into an old two-story house in the middle of the city, and hit a local bar one night while he and Ish took a bottle of Remy Martin to the head. In early fall, I saw him rock an old punk club with a crew of other young Memphis MCs during a show curated by my guy Cities Aviv.

Today, we premiere Hotel’s new single, “Code Talk,” produced by Young Antho. This is the Hotel sound that I’ve come to know in the months since we first met: dark, wavy and built for the internet, with a heavy dose of #thatmemphisshit. Hotel’s got a new project in the works, release date TBD. Get familiar.
