Deerhoof

PREMIERE: Deerhoof “Model Behavior”

It’s incredible to see the avant-garde surrealistic music-making Deerhoof remain together after 20+ years, pumping out album after album and continuing to formulate the right sound for their next project. The group’s currently prepping their 16th album, The Magic, expanding on sounds they’ve developed in these past few years and offering new ideas onto their own table.

Today, Mass Appeal is premiering the latest single off The Magic, titled “Model Behavior.” The track was inspired by James Brown in an odd Deerhoof-y sort of way, featuring a grooving bassline, funky guitar work, and really loud drums. It’s another notch toward the band’s own evolution, but rest assured, it’s as Deerhoof as one can expect.

Lead vocalist Satomi Matsuzaki sings a brief few lines over the thunderous track, alongside Greg Saunier:

fire i’m on fire
do re mi fa
a system a victim a candidate
a model behavior a candidate
i am tough and i don’t give up

Greg Saunier, drummer of Deerhoof, commented on the song:

It is only rarely in Deerhoof that my bandmates allow me to tune my drums up to James Brown tightness levels because they always say it’s too loud. But occasionally I slip one by them. This song is all about improvisation vs precision, that age-old tension existing in all music except computer music and classical music auditions. It’s that feeling on the dance-floor when you can do no wrong and that feeling with bureaucracy when you can do no right. It’s a sad song about Bernie Sanders.

The Magic drops June 24 via Polyvinyl; the record is available for pre-order now. Check out Deerhoof’s upcoming tour dates below.
