Animation Sponsored By Bill Gates: Helping the Poor Could Mean “Fewer Refugees Coming Into Your Country”
The 12 billionth human will never be born at all.
In the the past 200 years, the human population has exploded from 1 billion people in 1800 to over 7.4 billion in 2016. So, what can we expect for the next century? It’s actually not as bleak as you think, according to this Bill and Melinda Gates sponsored video by Oxford data visuals guy Max Roser. Population growth will eventually taper off in 2100 at about 11 billion, with the UN forecasting “that the 12 billionth human will never be born at all.”
The animations seems innocuous enough with its cutesy anthropomorphic characters and scientific figures, but then the pleasant-sounding narration veers unexpectedly into Brexit/Trump territory:
“No matter what your motivation is, whether you dream of a world where all people live in freedom and wealth, or you just want fewer refugees coming into your country.”
Wait, what? Translation: it’s good to help the developing nations whether you’re truly altruistic and want what’s best for the global community or are merely a xenophobe and nativist unconcerned with the plight of the rest of the world.
But stay positive. We can do this together! Inspiring message, Bill.
